Throw ball match - Girl’s inter-house

The throw ball match for girls was held on 1st August. One thing special about the girls throw ball match was all players from all the 4 teams were very enthusiastic. The first match was between Sapphires v/s Emeralds. It was very difficult to guess which team would win and which would lose. After a lot of effort Sapphire won. The next match was between Ruby and Topaz. In this case also both the teams were equally strong and Ruby house girls found it difficult to face the serves by the Topaz house girls. Same with the Topaz house girls who found it difficult to break Vijaya and Niveditha’s serve from Ruby house. But at last Ruby house won. The final match was held on 3rd August. The final match was between Sapphire and Ruby. In this match Ruby won but the match was tough according to the Ruby house girls. The Ruby house players never thought that they would win the match and would be the Champions! All in all it was a very exciting match and all the spectators enjoyed it.

Go green; A Bio-diversity Campaign by Times of India Group

Go green; A Bio-diversity Campaign by Times of India Group. On third August, Monday, three students Soumojit, Gaurav and Kaustav participated in a campaign organized by Times NIE. The previous week we were told to prepare a model on the topic ‘URBAN BIODIVERSITY’. We reached the venue at 9.00a.m. We were given places for the display of our projects. Before the display there was a small cultural programme by the host. The programme started with a skit by tiny tots creating awareness about the careless acts of the human beings which pollute the environment. It was followed by an insightful talk on preserving the environment by environmentalist Mr. Yellappa Reddy. Dr.Harini of “TREE” organization also delivered a speech on biodiversity. These words inspired everyone to think about the future world and the ways to preserve it. Another skit followed which showed everyone the effect of urbanisation on biodiversity. The programme ended with everyone asking questions to the environmentalist Mr. Yellappa Reddy and a song by the host school. By, Kaustav Ghosh Class IX.

Strikes out boredom - Interhouse-Carom Match

BOYS CAROM MATCH: The inter-house carom board match for 2009-10 took place on August 10. The 1st match was between Sapphire and Ruby house. With elegant shots Sapphire won the match and entered the finals. The 2nd match was between Emerald and Topaz house. With graceful moves Topaz won the match and entered the finals. For the 3rd place the match was between Ruby and Emerald. Finally the 3rd place was won by Ruby house. The final match for 1st place was between Topaz and Sapphire. With powerful shots Topaz won the carom match. GIRLS CAROM MATCH: The 1st carom match was between Topaz and Sapphire House. With a lot of effort Topaz won the match and entered finals. The 2nd match was between Ruby and Emerald. With powerful shots Ruby entered finals and for 3rd place the match was between Emerald and Sapphire. Finally the 3rd place went to Emerald. The final match for 1st place was between Topaz and Ruby. With elegant shots Ruby won the carom match.

63rd Independence Day at our School

Our 63rd Independence Day was celebrated at Deva Matha Central School, Banaswadi with great pomp and show. As we race our minds back to the past we are able to realize freedom now and then. We were proud to have our Guests of honour Mr. Peter George- Assistant General Manager (O) from ITI, Mrs. Gracey Peter- Chairperson, Kerala Samajam- Doorvaninagar, Mr. S.K Nair- Administrator, Garden City Group, Mrs. Jayashree Mohan- Vice-Principal-DMCS and Mr. Sadanandan – Internal Auditor-Garden City Group. We had our School Choir singing Emphasis is on Life. The auspicious day began with the scouts and the houses marching to the tune of the band. We had a programme by the little angels of Kinder Fun displaying costumes of different states, freedom fighter, famous personalities, scientists etc., with Hima Unnikrishnan and Seema escorting them. Following this Sakshi N Ullal of class II danced to “Yeh desh rangeela” song from Fanaa. We had Devraj and troop dancing with a war song from Jodha Akbar. Our trio girls of class XI did a portrayed a different version of “Yeh desh rangeela” from Fanaa again. After the dance was the mass drill with rhythmic beats by the band which was fantastic. The programme by the students wound up with our Teachers distributing the sweets for the day in our respective classes. Later on we had various games such as Banana eating, Water drinking, Bun eating, tailing the donkey, lemon and spoon race, sari and shirt folding, Face painting etc… conducted by our Teachers and Students for parents and grand parents specially. With the prize distribution ceremony we ended the glorious day of at our school.

On the eve of Independence Day, we had organized various co-curricular competitions, like; Rangoli, Flower arrangement, Vegetable carving and Making greeting cards. We got to see multi coloured geometrical, symmetrical patterns filled with beautiful colors. Our students were brilliant in arranging flowers as well. We had eye catching flower decorations with many innovations created with different ideas put together. Vegetable carving was even more interesting to see, we had a whole lot of amazing ideas carved and arranged using vegetables. The effort and neatness with which each art piece was done is truly laudable. The greeting cards made by our students were great. Each participant had taken a lot of interest and effort to bring out the final product with beautiful messages to their loved ones or everybody. This was shown in their work. Even the judges had a tough time in deciding the winners. Our judges this time were our students’ parents who enjoyed doing this job for us, as our teachers said they would find it difficult to select the best among the best.

RECITATION COMPETITION: Classes I – XI

The recitation competition for classes 1-4 was held on the 21st of August. Amazingly there were a fine number of tiny poets gathered in the school auditorium to entertain us. The competition began with Hindi poem followed by a number of other beautiful compositions in English, Kannada and Korean too. The audience was highly spirited and was enthusiastic. The judges Mrs. Deepti and Mrs. Faby and Mrs. Grace were surprised by the fine display of talents by the tiny tots. It was interesting to see that none of them had any stage fear. They display little actions to their performances, and that made the show very attractive. Who ever finally won does not matter, for it was a pleasure to see such an event itself. We also had recitation competition for our senior batch from class 5 to 11 on the same day. This was slightly different in show as well as the languages used. We got to hear a wide range and variety of poems. Many humorous poems were recited which left all the teachers and students laughing. The best performance was by the 10th standards, as they included many actions while reciting and more over it was fun-filled lyric time. All together it was a show to watch and enjoy. As I said earlier, who won doesn’t matter at all, as it is such events that bring everybody together.

ELOCUTION and DEBATE:

“Elocution” means the art of expressive speech and one which is effective as well. This is conducted in our school every year. Last year we had a wonderful topic “Teacher”, this year we had three different subjects to speak about; 1. Prevention is better than cure 2. Cleanliness is Godliness 3. A Stitch in time saves nine. These topics were interesting and I planned to speak about ‘Prevention is better than cure’ this differently. Each participant could choose any one topic. They had to link the topic to a concept and speak. Debate is arguing about an issue either for it or against a particular topic. This year there were two topics to select from – “The Board exam should be optional” and “Schools should only be set up exclusively for sports.” Many participants spoke for it arguing their points that board exams is good if optional, as many children are good in many other activities than academics and many against it saying that board exams are necessary as this will bring out the best all rounder as one will be completing his/her academics as well as achieve high position (because of academic degree) in any field they choose. Regarding schools having only sports activities, while some argued that it is not good to have only physical fitness without a degree, which will not make one successful completely, others argued that it is a good option to have only sports for those who are really bad in academics and excellent in sports. Such institutions will help bring laurels to our country because of sports. It was a good time listening to and being a part of this competition. We got so many good points and valuable information. Interschool Humanitarian Championship 2009

Our school has always been interested in taking up new, innovative projects and we never miss an opportunity that comes knocking. We had given an opening to all senior students of class 9, 10 and 11 to show up any kind of social service within their neigbour hood and say what they plan to do about it and how they will carry the good work always. In this regard a few of our students came forward and informed us that they plan to educate the down trodden and the ones who are interested in improving their self dependency. They grouped together and started teaching the house-keeping staff during their free time after school hours. This project was highted by RVM Interschool Humanitarian Championship 2009 sponsored by Union Bank of India. All our students won a participation certificate for the same to encourage their self-less service.

Teachers' Day 2009

Teachers’ Day 2009 was a wonderful experience for both the teachers and students of Deva Matha Central School. All the teachers were welcomed into the school with roses and cards by the students. Children of class IV to XI presented skits and songs. These cultural programmes were punctuated with Hanah of class XI playing with the teachers - paying teachers back by asking questions and riddles. The programme ended with some teachers singing couple of songs. In an informal ceremony on behalf of our beloved Chairman His Excellency Dr. Joseph V G, our Principal Mrs. Lata Mathew gave away mementoes  to all the teachers.

Dance Competition - Kinderfun on 14th October

If you thought only youngsters and adults can tap their feet to music, think again ! KinderFun students at Deva Matha Central School proved that it is also the prerogative of pre-schoolers to get into the rhythm! On Wednesday 14th October, 2009, the KinderFun students participated in a intra-school dance competition. It was a pleasure watching these tiny tots groove to the music. They were prepared for everything – western, film dance, disco, you name it! Some of them came all dressed for the occasion in their splendid costumes. Stage fear is something so alien to them. They just enjoyed themselves. High School students and other teachers watching the performances could barely contain their amazement at seeing the flexibility of these young dancers. They soon had their seniors clapping and cheering them on. That was all the encouragement they needed. Soon even the non-participants joined in and the quieter ones also were seen to be shaking to and fro ! They all had their own version of dancing – for some it was a vigorous shaking of the head, for others it was just jumping up and down ! But real serious dancing was also to be seen with some of them performing graceful steps and some being very athletic in their movements . One young man showed promise of giving good competition to Hrithik Roshan ! Surely, some of these budding performers are capable of dancing their way to success !

Annual Sports Meet – Deva Matha Central School, Banaswadi

The sense of excitement was evident when busloads of children from DMCS Banaswadi and Vidyaranyapura converged on the premises of GCC on 30th October, 2009. The occasion – The Annual Athletic Meet 2009. The senior students from Banaswadi could not wait to take off on the big Sports Ground waiting fro them! The event began with the arrival of the Guest of Honour, Mr. Ivan Nigli, former MLA, Karnataka, who was escorted onto the ground by Prof. V.B. Coutinho,President, Governing Council, Garden City Group of Institutions and our administrator, Mr. S.K. Nair. The Vice-Captains of the four Houses from Banaswadi formed a part of the escorting team. The school choir, commanded by Kavya D. School Vice- Captain, DMCS Banaswadi, led the gathering in the school song, after which Manish B. Shetty, School Captain, DMCS Banaswadi, presented the welcome speech. The spectacular March Past took off with the Guest of Honour, Mr. Ivan Nigli taking the salute. The March Past was led by the School Captains and Games Captains of both the schools, followed by the four Houses in the order of ranking last year. Each House troop was led by the House Captains from both Schools. The Band was led by Gajendra Khatana of DMCS Banaswadi and Keerthi Vasan from Banaswadi was on the Base Drum. The Scouts and Guides were led by Sai Ritesh Reddy and Sameeksha Anand from DMCS Banaswadi. Ruby House in red was adjudged the best Marching House. Eight of the schools best athletes ran with the Olympic Torch to signify the opening of the Games. The run was started by Sharmila Murali and Kalpana I , passed on to Keerthi Vasan and Evin Kumar, moving on to Rajat Kulkarni and Deepak and finally coming on to the Games Captain and Vice Captain Gourab Patra and Kunal S.Narayan, who then presented it to the Guest of Honour. Gourab Patra took the oath of sportsmanship on behalf of all the other captains and all the students. Mr. Ivan Nigli then spoke to the students on the importance of sports in the development of a healthy personality before declaring the Athletic Meet Open. After the March Past there was a Yoga display where students displayed their flexibility and concentration. They were trained by the Yoga teacher, Mr. Chikkanna. The Open Event, the Cross Country Race, was flagged off by the Guest of Honour, Mr. Ivan Nigli. The participants ran around the GCC Campus through points marked by the Scouts. Evin Kumar N. of Ruby House, known for his stamina for long distance running, established an early lead and maintained it, coming in first . He was followed by the ace runner of the school, Keerthi Vasan from Sapphire House. There were other displays of dumbbells and lezimes by the students from DMCS Vidyaranyapura and a breathtaking Karate display by students of DMCS Banaswadi , trained by Karate Master, Mr. Krishna. The students from Vidyaranyapura also displayed the pyramid formation. After that it was a medley of sports events which left everyone asking for more. The vast ground was fully utilized with events happening all around. While one track event was on the long jump or high jump was in progress at the back of the tents and another area of the ground was converted into the Throwing Arena with Shotput, Discus and Javelin Throw taking place. Praveen Das, Megha Alex, Esther Paul and Evin Kumar N. from Ruby House saw to it that each event they took part in pushed their House to greater heights. Keerthi Vasan , Kunal Narayan, Chetan Gowda and Kalpana I. from Sapphire House ensured that their House was not far behind. The Games are far from over. The Meet continues into 31st October, 2009 where the talent from Primary School will be exhibited. As 30th October drew to a close, there was a sense of triumph for all the participants as it was a close contest for all Houses. Spirits are high and the cheering was resounding. Both the schools will witness the climax of the sporting events. The students turned homeward, resolved to rest and return with a bang for the closing day.

Sports Day for Juniors - Day 2 - 31st October 2009

The second day of the Annual Sports Meet on the 31st was one that saw many cheers and tears. When the scoreboard went up, Ruby was still ahead with an almost twenty point lead. The day began with the March-past by the juniors. It is for the first time in the school’s history that the junior students had a March-past all for themselves. It was led by the two Junior Prefects, Preksha Deshmukh and Nitin B.R. The welcome speech, vote of thanks, all was handled by the Junior Prefects. Emerald was the junior house that bagged the first Marching Place. Then the Pre Nursery and the LKG came up with a drill involving pompoms. Many of the tiny tots were overawed by all the attention but somehow managed to complete the drill. The stole the show with their wide eyed innocence. The UKG also did a hoop drill. More confident and sure than their juniors they did their best. The races for the Kindergarten section were all very interesting. There was a banana eating race, mask race, marbles race, picking up waste race among many others.

INTER-SCHOOL LITERARY COMPETITION

Students of Deva Matha Central School, Banaswadi attended FESTLIT 2009 – A Celebration of Literature and Language at the Sindhi High School, KK Road, Bangalore. Raghav Jagannathan of Std. IX came third from among over forty participants for the Soliloquy. He played the part of “Bottom”- the weaver and did Bottom's Dream. He was commended by the judges for his acting ability as well for choosing to make the audience laugh rather than take them to serious heights. The School team was the first runner up in the Drama Competition. There were thirteen teams all presenting stories from RK Narayan's Malgudi Days. The school team performed an adapted version of Forty Five a Month and won accolades from the judges.

FANCY DRESS COMPETITION AT KINDERFUN

Wednesday 18th November, 2009 dawned bright and sunny. The same was the atmosphere at KinderFun, with the toddlers all dressed up for their Fancy Dress Competition, which is a part of the intra-school activities for children. The children were dressed up in a variety of costumes. There were the usual costumes like police officer, doctor, dancer, etc. Mythology and history were represented by characters like Hanuman, Ganesha, Tipu Sultan, Rani of Jhansi, Moses, Miriam, etc. We also had the likes of former President Dr. Abdul Kalam and Mahatma Gandhi. The only problem was our little Gandhiji did not seem to believe in non-violence. He found an apt partner in Hanuman and both were seen trying to attack each other with their props, much to the amusement of everyone around ! The teachers doing the judging were surely in a quandary as each child seemed to outdo the other. The applause they received was deafening and they did deserve it. It was amazing to see the creativity displayed by the parents in their efforts to dress their children. When complimented for their support, parents expressed gratitude at being given an opportunity to be involved in the event. Many of them said that as they did not receive such opportunities while they were children, they were re-living their own childhood through these kids ! Our youngest student, two-year old Taashvee , also was not far behind in the Fancy Dress Competition. She came dressed as MISS DMCS, with crown and sash and a cute little outfit. Though she could not understand what all the fuss was about, she enjoyed prancing around, lapping up all the attention she was getting. She truly was a little star, and had a huge crowd of fans following her ! The senior students were caught up in admiring these tiny tots. The confidence and enthusiasm of these children was so infectious that though the weather changed later in the day, the mood in the school remained upbeat throughout the day, thanks to the bright flowers of KinderFun!

You may house their bodies but not their souls, For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams. You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them like you. For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday. You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth. “ These lines by Kahlil Gibran are those that a teacher always remembers, for every year our children go from us into the world, seeking greener pastures, armed with the knowledge that we have been fortunate to impart to them. We are also fortunate that many of them come back every year on an evening that we have set apart for them- Alumni Day. Alumni Day is celebrated every year at DMCS, Banaswadi on the eve of the School Annual Day. This year as Alumni Day was organized many of us were apprehensive about the turnout as it fell on a Thursday rather than the usual Friday. As the evening progressed students kept pouring in till we had over a hundred students from five batches. Our Administrator, Mr. S.K Nair was also with us to meet the students. The current students of the school put up a couple of cultural programmes for their seniors which was greatly appreciated. Many of the students spoke recalling their school days. Teachers also recalled the punishments the students had got etc. A large majority of the Alumni spoke about the developments the school has seen over the past few years and they all thanked Nair sir and the Garden City Management for taking the school to heights that they had never imagined possible. The evening concluded with a small dinner that had been arranged at the school. The students left with promises to return the next year.

Annual Day - "Inspiring India"

The Annual Day at Deva Matha Central School, Banaswadi was celebrated on Friday 18th December, 2009. The theme for the occasion was ‘Inspiring India’, a celebration of the exotic and diverse cultures co-existing harmoniously in our country. Ms. Lizzie Philips, Joint Registrar for Cooperative Societies, Department of Cooperation, Govt. of Karnataka, was the Guest of Honour for the occasion. Shri A.R.K. Menon, President, School Managing Committee, presided over the function. KinderFun, the pre-school facility of the school, presented a variety entertainment programme. The enthusiasm of the children was amazing. Most of them even knew the lyrics of the songs they were dancing to and it was obvious that they were thoroughly enjoying themselves. With their colourful costumes, they looked even more adorable than they already are. Prizes were distributed to the winners in the co-curricular activities. The toppers in academics for the year 2008-2009 were also awarded prizes. The cultural programme for the evening comprised of carefully chosen programmes to highlight the multidimensional culture of the country. Some of the programmes were, a Radha-Krishna dance, a foot-tapping Konkani dance, a robust dance of Marathi fisher folk, Punyakoti, a heart-wrenching story of the truthful cow, in the form of dance drama, Kolatta, and Kalarai Vandanam, a tribute to the rich history of martial arts in the country. The highlight was a puppet theatre with puppets of a cow and a gypsy woman. The puppets anchored a qawwali programme and dance, paying homage to the contribution of Lucknow in our cultural heritage. The performers in the qawwali had the audience cheering them on for their expressive rendition. The High School students paid tribute to Michael Jackson, in true Indian style ! First they danced to two foot-tapping numbers in Tamil and Telugu with the signature steps of Michael Jackson and ended the item with one of his own songs, ‘Dangerous.’ The musical talent of the school was exhibited with the students singing ‘Pray for me Brother’, the famous composition of A.R. Rehman. The students provided the background score also. The growing Bengali presence in the school was acknowledged by a Bengali song sung by the High School students. The contribution of India in English literature was manifested by enacting a play by R.K. Narayan, ’45 a Month.’ Incidentally, this play was performed by our students at the Sindhi High School English Fest in October and won the 2nd prize. The programme ended with the popular ‘Jai Ho’ performed by the primary school children, which was appreciated by all present. All the children participated with great enthusiasm. This year’s programme saw a lot of creativity exhibited by teachers and children. The paper covers for prizes, jewellery for one dance, shields and swords for the Kalari Vandanam, joker cap and dress were all made by the students themselves. The puppet theatre was made in the school and the puppets, including the face and dresses were all made at school by the teachers. This work has been in progress for more than a month and the results made all the hard work very satisfying and rewarding.

Deva Matha Central School managed by Garden City Group of Institutions brought laurels to the city with its teacher Lakshmi Prasannan bagging the prestigious Guruvar Award as the outstanding Young Indian Teacher. The award marks the establishment of a movement to acknowledge the role of teachers in shaping the future of our nation. Touted as the biggest award in the country, it is a quite a rare honour for a school teacher hailing from Bangalore. Deva Matha Central school, Banaswadi headed by Dr. Joseph V.G has been a trend setter institution with novice programs that inculcate values in children.

Christmas is the season of Peace and Goodwill. The year 2009-2010 was a memorable one as our budding young choir of D M C S made us proud by performing A R Rehman's "Pray for me Brother", competing with the leading choirs of the Pallottine youth, St.Joseph's and Jyothi Nivas college presenting "Noel the Christmas story". Our heartfelt thanks and gratitude to Mrs. Roach for supporting us in every step of the way. This program inspired the youth to bring to the forefront the need of each of us to look around and reach out to those who are less fortunate than us.

FUN FEST AT PALACE GROUNDS

News in Education is a programme conducted by various newspapers to involve schools in media. Deva Matha Central School is a part of the NIE programme of The Times of India. Besides the students receiving a special edition of the newspaper daily and bi-monthly classes in craft work and personality development, the Annual Fest is an event that schools look forward to. All the NIE schools get to participate in various events and showcase their talents. This year’s Fun Fest was conducted at the Palace Grounds on 07th January, 2010. The mega event had more than 70 schools participating in the various events. 43 students from DMCS Banaswadi participated in the events like Collage, Vegetable Carving, Flower Decoration, Short Story Writing, Poetry Writing, Mad Ads, Fancy Dress, Painting and Traditional Dance. The students participated with great enthusiasm. It was also a learning experience as they were able to witness many styles in the respective fields. Though they returned tired and exhausted, they were happy that they were able to put up a good show and also enjoy themselves.

DMCS SCORES AT SCIENCE EXHIBITION

Megha Elizabeth of Std. V secured the Ist place in the Drawing Competition at the Science Exhibition conducted at Vagdevi Vilas School, Varthur, on Friday 08th January, 2010. She competed with students from 32 other CBSE schools in the competition. The students were asked to draw a picture depicting the depletion of natural resources and the disastrous consequences of it. Megha’s portrayal of the scene of an earthquake due to environmental destruction placed her in the top slot. A total of 18 students from DMCS took part in the Exhibition which was very informative. The Exhibition was spread out on 08th and 09th January and the students were able to gain a lot of information on various science projects. Megha is a talented student who also excels in sports and academics. She bagged the Champion’s Trophy for under-12 girls in the Sports Events for the year. Congrats Megha, we are proud of you ! Keep up the good work !

DMCS STUDENTS BRING LAURELS AT KARATE COMPETITION

11 students from DMCS Banaswadi participated in the first Inter-State Invitational Karate Championship at Devanahalli on Sunday 10th January, 2010. Saranya S. and Rahul Raj of Std. VII secured the IInd and IIIrd positions respectively in the competition which saw over 30 schools participating. The students were trained by our in-house Karate Master Mr. Krishna and his assistant Mr.Shiva. Saranya was the only girl to participate from our school and she justified her presence at the Championship by getting the IInd place. Saranya is a talented sportsperson and dancer. She has secured the Championship trophy for under-14 girls in the Sports Events for the year. Rahul has been very consistent with his Karate classes. His hard work has paid off and earned him the IIIrd place in the Championship. Congrats Saranya and Rahul ! You have held the name of your school high. Keep it up !

Chinese visit to DMCS

On Monday, the 11th of January 2009, the Chinese students visited Deva Matha Central School for an interaction with the students of the school. Selected students from classes four to seven were waiting for them having prepared many questions for their Chinese annas(brothers) and akkas(sisters). In a friendship born out of curiosity the students had a one to one interaction. Each Chinese student was assigned one Indian student and they interviewed each other. Names and place names were difficult for both groups and they began by writing down all the names. After the introduction which was intended to be brief but went on for more than half an hour, the school students became self appointed guides for the Chinese. They took them around for a very proud display of the all the state of the art facilities at the school, especially proudly showing off the Kinderfun area. This was followed by one more round of interaction. The Chinese were then offered some refreshments after which they returned to the college. The Chinese students felt that the school students were much easier to talk to than adults as they had an unlimited store of patience and curiosity. They went back with hearts that were made light through interacting with small children

Republic Day Celebration

Republic Day like our National Day is a day when we as Indians reflect on and bask in the glory of our nation. It is a day when even the greatest pacifist will be atleast secretly a vehement nationalist. As schools, the ethos of Repbulic Day is to instill this patriotic fervour within the minds of the younge generations as well spread knowledge through the Annual Exhibition held on this day each year. At our school, the national flag was hoisted by M. Sanu Mathew - Program Manager from GMR varalakshmi Foundation, an NGO run by the GMR group. This was followed by the March Past by the High school. Mrs. Lalitha Shetty, mother of the School captian, Manish B Shetty inaugurated the exhibition of the Primary and High School whereas Mrs. G. Vasantha, the mother of the school Vice Captain, Kavya D inaugurated the Kinderfun Exhibition. The exhibitions displayed both models and charts on various subjects. Craft items prepared by the students like Tie & Dye and fancy candles were all displayed. All the parents really appreciated the efforts of the syudents and said they look forward to the next year's display as each year brought them newer things to see.

Graduation Day 2010

February 5th 2010, marked its importance with a lot enthusiasm as we watched our handsome and beautiful children of DMCS draped in beautiful saris and sherwani’s gracing the occasion of their graduation. The invocation ceremony commenced with “Spirit of God dwelling in them’. The chief guests Mr. Peter George – Addl. Gen. Mgr – (Operations) - ITI Ltd. said, “All won’t be well unless they choose the profession they are passionate about”. Ms. Neha Mani - Level-2 Advisor – DELL India Ltd. shared her experiences and said, “Failure is a success to life”. Each child was inspired after they lit the candle and this light brought glow in each face. Good memories of childhood were highlighted on screen which kept the audience in humour. Profile of each child was read out, parents took pride to walk them rto receive their mementoes. Mr. Lata Mathew, our Principal said that each individual should ensure they give their best and believe in themselves to dream of excellence. DMCS does not wish to bid goodbye as they hoped to see everyone back for year eleven. Tears filled every teacher as they sang, “Sunrise, Sunset” recalling, how children were carried and how it was exciting to see every child as grown ups’. The evening was enjoyable as they dined and interacted with each other.

February 14th, 2010 was one proud moment for all Gardenians. Our Chairman Dr. Joseph V G was among the many eminent personalities from various walks of life, who were present at the Grand Finale of the Munch Star Singer Junior Competition of Asianet to give away the prizes to the winners of the competition. The competition, the reality show was held for the singers below 18 years. The programme was telecast in Asianet from evening 6’o clock to 12’0 clock. The First Prize was bagged by Ms. Swetha. Second prize won by Ms. Athira and the Third prize has gone to Sadhika.

Six students of Deva Matha Central School, Banaswadi, participated in the Inter-School Abacus competition held at St. Xavier’s Girls High School, Frazer Town on Sunday 14th February, 2010. It was a total success for the school with 2 students, Shruthi Aditya of Std.VII and Seema. G of Std.IV securing First place, Arathi S of Std. V and Saurav Aditya of Std.IV securing second place, Megha Elizabeth of Std V and V.Arathi of Std I securing the consolation prizes.

An Effort to Empower Rural Women

Deva Matha Central School got the opportunity to educate the public about the environmental and art and craft projects done at school at two places in Karnataka. One in Hubli-Haliyal and Mangalore. This was organized by G.M.R Varalakhmi foundation of G.M.R Group. Mrs. Sanu Mathew – Programme Manager for the Karnataka group made all arrangements for us to go ahead with the training. In both the places , it was conducted in a remote rural area where women are considered only fit to do house-hold work. They did not have any income to cal their own. We were amazed to see that they had so much of interest in art and lot of confidence in themselves. They learnt everything that we taught, eagerly. Various projects were taught to them like how to make paper bags and market them to eradicate plastic, how to make candles and different moulds from wax, ceramic wares, how to tie & dye with various colours etc,. Waste management was also taught like using old saris to make mats. Three of our teachers Mrs. Nagina Begam; Mrs. Nisha James & Mrs Mamtha Ajay were involved. Two of our students were also involved: Ms. Sree Vidya N & Nisha S Dumale.

Education is every child’s birth right.

We are taught in school that every child has to get the basic education to earn a living. But what happens to those children whose parents are below the poverty line, who are neither educated themselves nor take any effort in educating their kids? Steps have been taken to eradicate child-labor, but how far is it effectively followed? We still see many children just playing around on the streets while their parents work nearby. Or they are also made to do small jobs to help their parents. What can we do? While we teach in school to educate those who are needy, it can be anybody, your maid servant, or his/her children or any nearby worker’s child etc.., only few take it to heart and work in this regard. Taking her responsibility with heart one student of class V from our school actually admitted 5 children nearby to her residence to a government run school. She spoke to them found out that due to poverty, their parents were not willing to send them to school, but they had lot of interest to study. So this girl with the help of her parents and along with her sister went to the school, spoke to the authorities and got the children admitted. Now she regularly follows up with regard to their involvement in school. This girl is Anushree Ravindran from Class V. Dear Anushree, We from the school appreciate your initiative to bring up the needy and giving them a life of self-respect.

Graduation Day for Tiny Tots

The Graduation Day of the UKG students was a landmark event for the school as this is the first time that the school has conducted such an event. The UKG students were all dressed in red graduating gowns and the formal graduating caps. This event took place on the 6th of March at six in the evening. An open stage was arranged and the LKG and first standard students put up various cultural programmes. A value based Magic show on the Joy of Endless Parenting’ by the Guinness Record Holder Rajesh Fernando was also arranged. Both the parents and children enjoyed the show. Each child, accompanied by his or her parents came onto the stage and received a memento and a scroll each from Shri A.R.K Menon, the President of the School Managing Committee. The school felicitated Mrs. Lopez, a kindergarten teacher with over four decades of experience on this landmark occasion. After class photos, refreshments were served and the children went back home tired but happy.
