Annual Sports Meet – Deva Matha Central School, Banaswadi

The sense of excitement was evident when busloads of children from DMCS Banaswadi and Vidyaranyapura converged on the premises of GCC on 30th October, 2009. The occasion – The Annual Athletic Meet 2009. The senior students from Banaswadi could not wait to take off on the big Sports Ground waiting fro them! The event began with the arrival of the Guest of Honour, Mr. Ivan Nigli, former MLA, Karnataka, who was escorted onto the ground by Prof. V.B. Coutinho,President, Governing Council, Garden City Group of Institutions and our administrator, Mr. S.K. Nair. The Vice-Captains of the four Houses from Banaswadi formed a part of the escorting team. The school choir, commanded by Kavya D. School Vice- Captain, DMCS Banaswadi, led the gathering in the school song, after which Manish B. Shetty, School Captain, DMCS Banaswadi, presented the welcome speech. The spectacular March Past took off with the Guest of Honour, Mr. Ivan Nigli taking the salute. The March Past was led by the School Captains and Games Captains of both the schools, followed by the four Houses in the order of ranking last year. Each House troop was led by the House Captains from both Schools. The Band was led by Gajendra Khatana of DMCS Banaswadi and Keerthi Vasan from Banaswadi was on the Base Drum. The Scouts and Guides were led by Sai Ritesh Reddy and Sameeksha Anand from DMCS Banaswadi. Ruby House in red was adjudged the best Marching House. Eight of the schools best athletes ran with the Olympic Torch to signify the opening of the Games. The run was started by Sharmila Murali and Kalpana I , passed on to Keerthi Vasan and Evin Kumar, moving on to Rajat Kulkarni and Deepak and finally coming on to the Games Captain and Vice Captain Gourab Patra and Kunal S.Narayan, who then presented it to the Guest of Honour. Gourab Patra took the oath of sportsmanship on behalf of all the other captains and all the students. Mr. Ivan Nigli then spoke to the students on the importance of sports in the development of a healthy personality before declaring the Athletic Meet Open. After the March Past there was a Yoga display where students displayed their flexibility and concentration. They were trained by the Yoga teacher, Mr. Chikkanna. The Open Event, the Cross Country Race, was flagged off by the Guest of Honour, Mr. Ivan Nigli. The participants ran around the GCC Campus through points marked by the Scouts. Evin Kumar N. of Ruby House, known for his stamina for long distance running, established an early lead and maintained it, coming in first . He was followed by the ace runner of the school, Keerthi Vasan from Sapphire House. There were other displays of dumbbells and lezimes by the students from DMCS Vidyaranyapura and a breathtaking Karate display by students of DMCS Banaswadi , trained by Karate Master, Mr. Krishna. The students from Vidyaranyapura also displayed the pyramid formation. After that it was a medley of sports events which left everyone asking for more. The vast ground was fully utilized with events happening all around. While one track event was on the long jump or high jump was in progress at the back of the tents and another area of the ground was converted into the Throwing Arena with Shotput, Discus and Javelin Throw taking place. Praveen Das, Megha Alex, Esther Paul and Evin Kumar N. from Ruby House saw to it that each event they took part in pushed their House to greater heights. Keerthi Vasan , Kunal Narayan, Chetan Gowda and Kalpana I. from Sapphire House ensured that their House was not far behind. The Games are far from over. The Meet continues into 31st October, 2009 where the talent from Primary School will be exhibited. As 30th October drew to a close, there was a sense of triumph for all the participants as it was a close contest for all Houses. Spirits are high and the cheering was resounding. Both the schools will witness the climax of the sporting events. The students turned homeward, resolved to rest and return with a bang for the closing day.
